How Much Can a cab Driver Save?
During our conversation with a cab driver he recalled that LPG conversion was offered free through an early promotion around the COVID period in 2020. With drivers queuing for installation, he said he paid KSh 3,000 to have his car converted. His experience offers a glimpse into early adoption, as the promotion and the purpose of that payment remain unverified.

Underground Carriege by Otodrive Kenya
Today, motorists considering LPG car conversion in Kenya face a substantial upfront investment. An older published guide quoted installation from 55,000 Ksh, while August 2026 reporting listed 67,000Ksh for vehicles below 1,000cc.

LPG Autogas Price per Litre in Kenya: KSh 90–100 Compared With Petrol
The price of LPG autogas in Kenya varies by supplier, station and date. January 2026 coverage of the Proto Energy–OLA Energy initiative quoted KSh 90 per litre, while August reporting recorded KSh 100 per litre following a temporary increase.
Consider an illustrative car travelling 200 kilometres daily:
| Daily fuel calculation | Petrol | LPG |
| Assumed consumption | 8 litres/100km | 9.6 litres/100km |
| Fuel required for 200km | 16 litres | 19.2 litres |
| Assumed price | KSh 215/litre | KSh 95/litre |
| Fuel cost | KSh 3,440 | KSh 1,824 |
That produces 1,616 Ksh in daily savings before petrol use and additional expenses. If we allow an illustrative 150 Ksh daily for petrol, the saving becomes 1,466 Ksh, or 38,116 Ksh across 26 working days.

At that saving rate, a 67,000 Ksh conversion would recover its cost after approximately 46 working days. However actual results depend on traffic, distance, engine efficiency, LPG prices, servicing and the petrol your system consumes.

What Is LPG Car Conversion?

LPG conversion adds a second fuel system to a compatible vehicle. Components typically include a dedicated gas tank, fuel delivery equipment and electronic controls.
The petrol system remains available. A converted car can therefore use LPG for everyday driving and petrol when necessary. Kenyan installer Straight Energy describes this as a bi-fuel conversion, with tanks commonly fitted in the boot or spare-wheel space. This is a vehicle-specific installation—not simply connecting a household cooking-gas cylinder to an engine.

For a high-mileage Uber driver, LPG can offer meaningful fuel savings. For an occasional driver, recovering the installation cost may take much longer.
Before committing, record your current fuel cost per kilometre, obtain a vehicle-specific quote and confirm refuelling locations along your routes.
LPG Conversion Cost in Kenya

| Vehicle category | Reported conversion cost |
| Below 1,000cc | 67,000Ksh |
| Other higher-capacity vehicles described in the report | Around 120,000Ksh |
| Above 2,000cc | 150,000Ksh–200,000Ksh |
| Land Cruiser with an 80-litre tank | 200,000Ksh–250,000Ksh |
Why Does an LPG Car Still Need Petrol?
Many systems start the engine on petrol and switch to LPG once operating conditions are suitable.
Some engines also require petrol injection while running on LPG. STAG notes that this depends on the engine and conversion system, so petrol consumption should remain part of the running-cost calculation.
Does LPG Conversion Damage the Engine?
Fear of engine damage should lead to proper assessment, rather than automatic rejection—or blind confidence.

Correct engine matching, installation and maintenance matter. STAG highlights ignition-system condition, precise system selection and valve adjustment where applicable. A poorly maintained engine can develop problems that become more apparent after conversion.
Choose an installer who explains compatibility, tests the system and provides ongoing support.
